The Charm of Old Roses
The Old roses in English cottage gardens of the late nineteenth
century were, curiously, nearly all French in origin. They were
preserved by rose lovers in these cottage gardens during the
time that Victorian gardeners were competing with each other
to grow ever larger and brighter English hybrids.
The charm of these roses is that they can be planted as they
used to be in the old cottage gardens, with herbaceous plants,
herbs and lavenders. Their wonderful subtle shades of pinky
purples and creamy apricot whites, together with their unrivalled
perfumes, make gardening with these Old roses such a delight.
Such is their diversity of style and habit, particularly when
compared with their modern descendants, that you will find an
Old rose for virtually every place in the garden or orchard.
